The Western Women’s Canadian Football League is celebrating International Women’s Day by announcing a new partnership with Leopold’s Tavern that will see the league receive $20,000 in sponsorship for the 2025 season.

The partnership is the first of its kind since the WWCFL’s inception in 2011, and will be used to assist the league and its six teams, including the Lethbridge Steel, Edmonton Arctic Pride, Calgary Rage, Saskatoon Valkyries, Regina Riot and Manitoba Fearless.

“We’re very excited to work with Leopold’s Tavern,” said Jaime Lammerding, WWCFL President. “Women’s football is growing across Canada, with girls competing at the youth level looking up to the players in the WWCFL and envisioning themselves in the same position. Sponsorships like this help the league to grow and continue to provide opportunities.”

In its 15 years of operation, the WWCFL has had more than 1,500 players taking snaps on the field, with many playing tackle football for the first time. The league follows 12-a-side Canadian amateur football rules, the same as the Canadian Junior Football League, with players able to join at the age of 16 and continue to play for as long as they like. Many players within the WWCFL have represented Canada at the Women’s World Tackle Football Championships in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2023.

The 2025 WWCFL season will kick off the first weekend of May and will wrap up with the championship final Saturday, June 28, hosted by the Western Conference champions. The full season schedule will be released soon.
